Technology

Technology needs to be implemented in a way that maximizes productivity and learning for the entire O’Keeffe community, especially the students.

Teachers:

-Let me know if you would like to sign out a laptop and projector for use in your classroom. The laptop is internet connected, plays DVDs,  and can be used to illustrate, expound, and explain the concepts you teach.

-There are a handful of teachers who put their assignments directly into Gradebook. Not only is this a time saving effort when it comes time to report cards, it is also the only way parents can view their child’s grades online. Please come by Room 208 for help in getting started. I can offer a PD for this if enough teachers feel it would be beneficial. I believe it is only a matter of time before entering grades for individual assignments on Gradebook will be mandatory. So why not get ahead of the curve?

-We need to come up with a way to more effectively utilize First Class. Teachers should be checking their CPS mail at least once a day. First Class also offers a way for all staff members to access online documents and forms. Please feel free to ask for assistance in setting up and staying current with your CPS email.

-I would be happy to assist you in making banners, posters, labels, signs, word-wall words, etc for use in your classroom.

-With the full suite of Microsoft Office programs installed on every computer in the school, there is so much more to offer than just typing and formatting papers (although that is a key skill).  Here is a basic list of all the publications your students can create which can tie into existing lessons: Advertisements, Award Certificates, Banners, Brochures, Business Cards, Business Forms, Calendars, Catalogs, Envelopes, Flyers, Gift Certificates, Greeting Cards, Invitation Cards, Labels, Letterhead, Menus, Newsletters, Paper Folding Projects, Postcards, Programs, Resumes, Signs, With Compliments Card.

-As we begin to move to students taking more of their Illinois State Tests online, it is paramount that students are comfortable enough with technology so they can do their best. To that end, students in grades 3-8 will be taking online practice tests each time they come into the computer lab. The tests will be informal and should not take up their entire time in the lab.

-There is an engaging free math fact game called Tux of Math Command. Students receive points for answering math fact questions accurately and quickly. This program is on every lab computer. Please let me know if you would like this game installed on your classroom computer.
